Bitteroot Fishing Report – 4/9

Dry Fly Fishing - Missoula Montana

L-43

The warmer weather that we’ve had has had little effect on the flows in our area, and the Bitterroot has been no exception. The flow just above town is just under 2400cfs and the clarity is a little dirty. There are all kinds of bugs coming off now, last night we were even seeing some sedges poppin. Grey Drakes, Skwalas, and March browns have all been getting eats so be prepared with a low riding skwala, like a Gould’s half down or a flush floater. For the mayfly madness, use a standard parachute adams, purple haze, rocky mtn. mint, D&D cripple, or a carnage drake. Underneath use pheasant tails, mighty mays, San Juan worms, amber princes, Pat’s rubber legs, jigstones, and hare’s ear nymphs. Streamers have been working well in the down time between hatches with flash fries, sparkle minnows, bighorn buggers, sculpzillas, and party girls. The streamers have been fishing best with short strips off the banks. Look for back and side channels away from the crowds and you should find some decent fishing today with this gorgeous weather.
