Bitteroot Fishing Report – 5/1

The Bitteroot has dropped down around 1900 cfs and is running clear (for now…). Huge heat wave coming, so be ready for a good push of water. The March browns and baetis all came to play over the weekend, so watch for the mayfly madness to continue this week. There were also ton of caddis out and about. The skwalas are still hanging around and you can still find fish looking up for them. For all you streamer junkies, the fish seem to be looking for a bigger meal lately. Smaller, flashy patterns have been moving a lot of fish. The fish will be tight to the banks and in the slow diamond chop on inside bends.

For March browns try a mimic may March brown, D&D cripple, parachute pheasant tail, or a brindle chute. Spotlight baetis, thorax BWO’s, hatch matcher BWO’s, and smokejumper baetis have all been getting chowed. For a skwala try a royal chubby, Amy’s ant, rogue skwala, rastaman skwala, or olive simulator.
