The Bitterroot has made a pretty decent drop in flows down to 4240 cfs and the clarity is barely shaping up along with it. The aggressive drop in flows has made the fishing a little spotty, but you can get it done if you really try. You’re better off heading up to Rock Creek or The Westfork of The Bitteroot and getting into the Salmon Flies while they’re hot, but if you’re still inclined to fish the Bitterroot, bring some extended body drakes, D&D cripples, orange and purple chubbies, hackle stackers, and some smaller caddis patterns for the evening. Count on tandem nymph rigs and dry dropper rigs to work best until you see some top water action. Underneath use a bigger prince nymph, bread crusts, flash back pheasant tails, batman nymphs, psycho princes, caddis pupae, and big green machines. Hanging one of these off the back of a chubby for a dropper has been a good searching rig for mid day. Keep pounding the banks with your rigs in these higher flows for you best luck.
