Bitterroot River Fishing Report - 3/21

It’s fast becoming a fall menu for the Bitterroot fatties. With baetis, mahoganies and fall drakes all coming off up here right now, darker bodied mayflies ranging from size 12 cripples and button emergers to small parachute Adams/purple haze stuff in 16s to 20s are working well. We’re also seeing enough of the big fall caddis, both the Octobers and Hydros, so that the fish are paying attention too. Skittering large gray or orange high riding patterns (of any style- caddis, oversized mayflies, terrestrials) across the surface will get you some aggressive takes rain or shine right now. The streamer action has been heating up for us as well and a dead-drifted swing with the occasional twitch has been our best presentation in the clouds. Dark olive is our happy color lately.

HATCHES/Flies: Hecubas, Tricos, PMDs, caddis, hoppers. Dark, heavy nymphs for subsurface. JJ’s specials, articulated streamers, bead-head woolly buggers.
