Bitterroot Fishing Report - 4/21

Beginning in April, once a week we will post a brief description of a rig we saw during the previous week that had one of our Kingfisher stickers on the window. When you recognize it as being your car described in our hatch report, stop into the shop and pick out 2 dozen nymphs or dries on us!!

With the flows just now starting to stabilize and drop from the cooler weather we’ve had, it’s time for this bad boy to start fishing again. The flows on the Bitterroot have swung back down around 3600 cfs above town and the clarity is still poor. The River is still high and brings the possibility of danger around every corner, so be careful!!! The dry fly fishing will be spotty, so expect to be fishing tandem nymph rigs and streamers. If you do get a window of dry fly action a rogue foam skwala or a purple haze should work for the bugs on the menu. For the nymphs, a tandem rig with a Pat’s rubber leg, Skwala nymph, pheasant tail, red copper John, San Juan worm or a micro stone should work. If you want to swing some streamers, use heavy dark colored buggers and sculpin patterns tight to the banks. In higher flows like this, getting your junk to the fish can be tricky. Using heavier than usual bugs and giving them an extra second or two to get down can make a HUGE difference.

Browns Lake is iced off, open and fishing well. However, the private land owners surrounding Browns Lake are now enforcing there NO trespass rights. All the bank fishing with the exception of the public land at the south and east sides of the lake is now closed to walking. We have provided a map showing the property lines and places to legally access the lake. The boundaries highlighted with green are open to the public.
