Bitterroot Fishing Report - 4/3
Kingfisher Employee – Scott Hickey on the Bitterroot 4/2

Beginning in April, once a week we will post a brief description of a rig we saw during the previous week that had one of our Kingfisher stickers on the window. When you recognize it as being your car described in our hatch report, stop into the shop and pick out 2 dozen nymphs or dries on us!!

The bugs are flying. The fishermen are fishing. The trout are chowing. Yup! It’s spring! With the weather we have on file for today and the flows sitting around 2400 cfs in town, it’s go time. The Skwalas are creeping up in bigger numbers and as it gets warmer the hatch is going to get more pervasive. The dry fly fishing mid-day has been a mix up of midge and skwala fishing starting around 1pm. It’s going to be a case of trying one or the other until you find out what the fish want. For a Skwala, use a low riding pattern in a size 10 or 12. You want that fly to sit right in the surface film. Dropping a strap hanger off the back end of your Skwala is not a bad idea either. For a strap hanger (dropper) use a smaller pheasant tail or micro stone. For a midge pattern, a small dark bodied parachute (size 16 or 18) along with your other basic midge flies. If you’re force to go sub-surface, egg patterns, San Juan worms, Pat’s rubber legs and small double beaded stones will work best. There’s big time construction going on at the Florence Bridge so you’ll want to avoid that. The east side of Victor channel has obstruction issues as well.
