Bitterroot Fishing Report – 5/4

Clark Fork River Fishing Report - 4/4

From the top to the bottom, the Bitterroot is still rising and fishing.  The cooler weather for the rest of the week may stifle the flows some but it’s going to be a day to day thing from here on out.  As far as conditions go, this is probably your least best option for floating right now.  excluding the main channel, the back and side channels have been good options for wade fisherman to get some refuge from the increased flows.  The flow above town is creeping past 4200cfs with limited clarity.  If you are still heading up here, tandem nymph rigs and dry dropper rigs have been fishing best.  There have still been lot’s of bugs popping but the fish have been pretty fickle about eating on top.  Bring some big parachute adams, purple hazes, march browns, grey drake extended bodies, and low riding skwala patterns just in case. For dry/dropper rigs, purple and olive chubbies, olive chernobyls, and foam stone patterns with a prince nymph, pheasant tail, San Juan worm, Double beaded stone, Pat’s rubber leg, Red fox squirrel, or a hares ear nymph hanging off the back is a good bet.  streamers have been getting some chases too with flash fries, sparkle minnows, yellow yummies, sculpzillas, and mouthwashes.  If you’re floating, the increased flows tend to displace the fish into the bank, so keep your rigs tight to the shoreline and you should have some success.
