Bitterroot report – 5/3

BR-L-22The uppermost river is showing a little upward hitch as of early this morning, but it’s likely nothing to worry about.  The lower 3/4 of the ‘root are still on the drop and looking ideal for stellar fishing today.  There will be a bit of wind, but the 20 mph gusts they’re calling for will not even be noticed by the rising Bitterroot fish.  March browns and caddis.  That’s been the name of the game.  Nymphing or deep droppers off your dries will probably be more productive for you before about noon, but water temps are up enough so you could have good surface action right out of the chute.  Keep your patterns realistically sized up here (unlike the Blackfoot and Clark which LOVE oversized junk this time of year), and let your casts drift well past fish that ignore your offering the first time before picking back up for a second shot . . .which lately, is often the presentation they’ll eat.
