Bitterroot Report – 6/1

brownFlows are dropping hard on the ‘root right now and the fishing’s been getting better every day.  At Darby this morning, the river’s running about 1740 compared to 2490 on this day a year ago.  The uppermost river is giving it up HUGE on salmonflies and golden stones while caddis and mayfly dries are motivating fish to the surface mid river and lower.  The bright sun today will only help with getting the big bugs moving on the upper end, and the river is still carrying enough color so that suddenly sunny won’t inhibit the dryfly rise on the mid and lower river either.  It should be very good up here today.  Keep in mind that the water is still ‘RIPPIN’ and you can get into serious trouble in a hurry on the ‘root if you’re not paying attention.  This river and Rock Creek are best left to experienced rowers, especially this time of the year.  Wading the back channels and fishing the eddies will be very effective, too, if you don’t have a boat.  Enjoy the break in the gloom today!
