Bitterroot Report – 6/29

DSCN4079Oh yeah, it’s a happy place like all the other rivers now that we’ve gotten the first few days of blazing sun out of the way.  PMDs,  hoppers and caddis have been the go to bugs on top although leggy attractor dries (PMX,Chew toys, etc.) with deep droppers have also been working well.  You’ll have very good caddis action from late afternoon up until dark.  Swinging quartering soft hackles right at dusk will hook you up some fish whose size will spook you.  You don’t see these fish that often during the day.  The bigger, slower water of the lower river is the best for this tactic.  Tandem nymph rigs of red San Jauns and copper Johns in the riffled insides of bends are a sure thing if you just need a hook-up.  The ‘root fish can be particular, so if your parachute PMD is getting dissed by risers, switch to a cripple or comparadun PMD and give those a whirl before deciding they’re not eating PMDs.  Bring your sunscreen, here comes summer!
