Bitterroot Report – 9/18

L-1

Still some trico action up here, especially mid and lower river, but like we’ve been saying, it ain’t for the faint of heart.  6X, VERY specific patterns (day to day so you’ll have to rotate through ’em) and drag free drifts are key.  If you can find a spot that’s a backwater where fish are cruising still water, that can be your easiest shot at truly large fish.  Cast it out there, leave it and be quiet.  Pay attention because if you’ve got the right pattern, eventually somebody will come along and eat it.  Tandem nymph rigs of red San Juans, fast water princes and/or beadhead hare’s ear type stuff is working subsurface.  The streamers have been a bit lackluster, but that could change in the consistent clouds they’re calling for.  Bees have been BY FAR our best topwater bug, but THAT could also change as well with clouds.  Look for gusting winds of 29 mph today.  Yee haw.
