Bitterroot River – 10/7

Looks like more wind on the way today, but the ‘root, in general, seems fish about as well as any river in the area under blowing conditions.  There is some very good fishing to be had up here these days from all the way up top, clear down to Missoula.  The sunny conditions on tap today will mean the mid to upper river will probably treat you the best.  The lower river has been the star on cloudy days.  Look for fish actively rising to mahoganies heat of the day.  Tandem nymph rigs that include stuff like copper Johns, fastwater princes, silli leg stones, tan San Jauns will all be good bets underneath.  When the fish begin looking up, a variety of darker bodied mayfly patterns in sizes 14 to 20 should be effective.  A brown button emerger, Lawson cripple or comparadun in a 14 should work well by midday. *The Kingfisher U of M accredited fly fishing class rods are once again available while supplies last.*
