Almost to the day, the beginning of April is looking like the real deal in terms of seriously good dry fly fishing for river-wide success locally. The Bitterroot is coming up fast as of this morning, so keep an eye on flows when deciding where to go. The past few days have been amazing from Rock Creek to the Clark Fork. Many more skwalas now appearing on the Clark and the Bitterroot is now seeing decent numbers of March Browns, Caddis and yellow sallies. The bright sun yesterday made the fish a bit sketchy and making sure you were giving ’em what they wanted was key. What WAS the key? Nemouras. Nothing new here at all. The ‘root switches over to secondary hatches these days, nearly as fast as the main hatch of skwalas begins. We’ve been using Goddard caddis for this bug for years. Clip the antennae off, trim the hackle flat on the bottom and there’s no better imitation out there. Subsurface the streamers are working well on the lower river with yellow being the best color on brighter days and olive or brown producing well in the clouds. San Juans and big prince nymphs are still a happy combo under an indicator. By 10:30, though, you should be in the money fishing a trimmed Goddard and a size 14 purple haze or button emerger.
