Bitterroot River Fishing Report: 5/1

BR-L-10The entire river is on the drop right now and the fishing up here should be decent today, better tomorrow.  Higher water (even though it’s dropping), combined with wind and the first bright sun in awhile won’t do you any favors.  Luckily, with the revised forecast, it looks like you’ll get a bit more time before the rivers blow for real.  Last year, they kind of rollercoastered with big pushes of water beginning to let loose on April 25th and sustained ugly began around the 12th of May. The 12th  may be a good guess this year too.  Yes well see some pushes of water before that due to the warm-up by the end of the week, but nighttime lows are staying COLD!  At this point last year, the lower river  was running 8670 compared with 2430 this year.  Look for more VERY good caddis and March brown dry fly action as the river settles back down.  Look for the caddis to keep things active right up until early evening.  This is also one of our favorite times of the year to pull streamers on the lower river from about Florence downstream.  More refined bodies seem to work best on the streamer presentations down here this time of year.  We like YELLOW!
