Bitterroot River Report: 4/28

KenBanners-BT-050

The river is seeing an aggressive bump in flows this morning after the unusually warm couple of days we had.  This won’t help your prospects much especially since they’re calling for NASCAR speed winds today as well, but the Bitterroot has been fishing SOOOOOO well recently, that we think it’ll still give up at least decent fishing today if you’re choosy about water character.  Fish protected backwaters and pool areas that won’t see much lateral change as levels rise.  Depth change is far less of an issue to the fish than side to side change.  Still crazy caddis activity up here as well as March browns and drakes motivating fatties to the surface.  We think It’ll be more of the same today but just on a totally new yardstick of what success is.  The upper river near Darby has seen a 230 cfs bump in the past 24 hours while the lower river is just now thinking about coming up.  The lower 1/2 of the river is a good bet to try to stay ahead of the push of water . . not so much the wind.

HATCHES/Flies:
Skwalas, caddis, nemouras, March browns, capnias, BWOs. Consider buggers as a streamer option in the slow stuff.
