Bitterroot River Hatch Report – 4/12

brandon-bowHere we go again! Better weather has the bugs coming off in bigger numbers and the afternoon hatches of March browns and blue wings have pods of fish up and working now rather than chasing individual risers. We’re still having good luck fishing skwala type stuff that varies a bunch from the norm. LOTS of fatties eating opportunistically when you put it right on ’em. We’ve actually been doing very well using a Schroeder’s hopper for a skwala and hanging a brown San Juan deep below it. Streamer activity is picking up on the lowermost river, too, and either a light green or yellow look with a “twitch/drop, twitch/drop” retrieve has been the best.

HATCHES/Flies:
skwalas, caddis, nemouras, March Browns, capnias, BWOs

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Kingfisher is the largest dealer of Simms Fishing Products in the Rocky Mountains and the lone dealer of Sage flyrods in the Missoula area.
