Bitterroot River Report – 9/9

L-1

The Hoot Owl restrictions on the entire Bitterroot have been lifted.

FWP will be electroshocking Hannon to Darby the 9th, 10, and 11th.

There is still some floatable water on the ‘root these days, but it has become a VERY good wade fishing opportunity just because there is so much water up here right now that is boat limiting.  Water temps have dropped considerably and the fish have been looking up.  Tricos are providing some technical shots at big fish on the lower reaches below about Stevensville while the midday fishing has been very solid with a variety of mayfly, terrestrial, and attractor stuff.  We’ve been having success using a #10 or 12 Bugmeister with a 10″ natural colored San Juan.  Purple haze and cripple patterns in a 14 have been evil as well when it’s raining or there is full on cloud cover.  On the warmer evenings, swinging soft hackles at the end of quartering upstream, quickly stripped back casts has been producing savage hits.  Good stuff.
