Blackfoot – 3/21

KenBanners-BT-048The Blackfoot has been running about 200 cfs above historical averages on the lower end recently. The flow has stabilized over the past 5 days after a fairly sudden bump which had shut down the fishing to a large degree. Things are better now. Still a matter of getting on the bottom whether you’re fishing nymphs or streamers. Dryfly opportunities are here and there but can be VERY VERY good when they happen. Midges/small (size 18 or 20) mayflies are the surface goods. Avoiding pools deeper than about 7′ will keep your subsurface offerings in contention. The past couple of days, our best rig on the lower 1/2 of the river has been either a black or rust colored bugger or bunny with a pink San Juan off the bend of the hook about 10″. Dead drift this set-up with a slow drag (yeah, I know that’s a contradiction, you know what I mean) and set hard on even the slightest bump. Some of our biggest fish lately have been BARELY perceptible. On the upper river, our best rig – by far – continues to be a hare’s ear in tandem with the worm. Slower moving, water about 5′ deep is the happy stuff.HATCHES: Midges, capnias, BWOs

PATTERNS: Red or pink San Jaun worms in tandem with size 12 or 14 hare’s ear nymphs. Size 20 or 18 para mayfly stuff

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: You know we’ll refill your Kingfisher label gink bottles for a buck dontcha?
