Blackfoot Report – 7/18

L-2It’s getting warm up here and it shows in the midday fishing.  The water on the lower river reached 71 degrees yesterday and will likely approach that again today.  You’re much better off in nearly all arenas to be on early and off before the heat of the day. The lower river is a throw away in the hot sun but can be very good if you head up there at daybreak and plan to be off by noon.  Way too many tubers and recreational cool water seekers to be good for your fishing prospects.  Focusing on PMDS and spruce moths right out of the chute is a good plan.  Batman nymphs or something similar is a nearly sure thing on the Blackfoot these days.  Deep droppers of a size 16 p-tail about 20″ under your hopper have been mining up good fish, too, when the dries have been stalling.

1/2 OFF Fridays.  50% Off your 1st dozen nymphs and dries!  Every Friday – Every Week

HATCHES: caddis,  PMDs, yellow sallies, hoppers and terrestrials in general

PATTERNS: golden stones in sizes 6 to 14, whitlock sculpines in black. Attractor stuff in a size 8 or 10, elk hair or other caddis in a 12 or 14. Double p-tail nymph rigs.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Evening fishing on the Blackfoot is often overlooked and can be AMAZING, especially on the cooler water sections mid river and higher.  Can you say caddis??
