Blackfoot Report – 9/18

The Blackfoot is once again open after a total closure. The restriction was recommended by the Blackfoot Drought Committee and began on Sept. 5th.  It was initiated by flows at Bonner falling below 500 cfs to 488, a “trigger point” independent of temperature in the Blackfoot Drought response plan.

In spite of the wind that’s on tap for today, the clouds will likely improve your subsurface opportunities greatly.  The streamer action should begin to pick up compared with the bright sunny days we had pre closure. Deeply presented tandem nymph rigs that include red San Juans, red copper Johns and size 16 p-tails should be productive as well.  If you do plan on working the surface, big yellow stimulators with p-tail droppers are a very good bet this time of year.  The good evening fishing that had been ongoing pre closure is likely to be a bit more lackluster in the substantially cooler weather.  While the lower flows are making rowing the Blackfoot more of an obstacle course, it will make for some easy and productive wading.  Flows at Bonner this morning are 472.
