Blackfoot River Fishing Report – 5/4

bitterroot spring fishing

The Blackfoot is still slowly creeping up in flow despite the cold nights we’ve been having.  The flow above Bonner crept past 3100cfs and will probably start to slow with the cooler days forecast for the rest of the week.  With the flows as high as they are, it’s definitely much more of a boaters game right now. If you are wade fishing, your best luck is going to be walking the banks and cherry picking the pocket water and obvious pools. Streamers and nymphs are going to be working best but you should still see some top water action. For streamers use Dalai lamas, Flash minnows, Sparkle minnows, and anything big dark and articulated. For nymphs use pheasant tails, hares ears, double beaded stones, egg patterns, Pat’s rubber legs, micro stones, prince nymphs, and San Juan worms. Just in case you do see some dries coming off, a purple haze, parachute adams, or olive chubby should get you covered. The Higher flows displace the fish into the banks so keep your junk tight to the shoreline and you should have some success.

A Winston MXII 7wt was lost up on the Blackfoot yesterday.  If you see or come across it, please drop it by the shop for a little reward.
