Blackfoot River Fishing Report – 5/13

Fly Fishing Missoula

Fly Fishing MissoulaBeginning in April, once a week we will post a brief description of a rig we saw during the previous week that had one of our Kingfisher stickers on the window. When you recognize it as being your car described in our hatch report, stop into the shop and pick out 2 dozen nymphs or dries on us!!

The Blackfoot is still on a steady drop after these last few days but still high and off color.  The flow at Bonner is at 4800 cfs and probably won’t get too much lower with the warmer weather we have forecast this week. Rock creek is a much better option right now but if you’re planning on heading up here you better make it quick before we see the final push of water in the next couple days. You can expect tandem nymph rigs to fish best most the day with pheasant tails, black or olive double beaded stones, San Juan worms, fast water princes and red copper johns.  Streamers should turn some big fish too.  The best luck with streamers has been with big dark articulated junk.  Keep in mind the river is still a little high.  In these conditions the fish get moved from mid river to the banks to escape the strong current.  So keep your rigs tight to the banks and be careful.

If you own and iPad 1 or 2, we have 6 MFC original iPad covers to give away. The first people through the door get’em!!! If you come in with a kingfisher tattoo on your forehead you can have two!!!

Browns Lake is iced off, open and fishing well. However, the private land owners surrounding Browns Lake are now enforcing there NO trespass rights. All the bank fishing with the exception of the public land at the south and east sides of the lake is now closed to walking. We have provided a map showing the property lines and places to legally access the lake. The boundaries highlighted with green are open to the public.
