Blackfoot River Fishing Report 7/15

Current Conditions and Restrictions: The Blackfoot River currently is under hoot owl restrictions. Fishing is no longer allowed from 2 p.m. to midnight. Water temps are really quite warm, maxing out at anywhere from 69-73 degrees each day. We recommend that you frequently take the water temp as the day warms up. Flows are sitting at 606 cfs.

Fishing Activity: Fishing in the lower sections of the Blackfoot River has been slow. Bites are sporadic, and the fish that are being caught tend to be on the smaller side. Conversely, the upper stretches of the river are experiencing somewhat cooler conditions, resulting in slightly better fish activity.

Dry Fly Fishing: The dry fly fishing has been productive for the past few weeks. The river offers a variety of hatches, including Pale Morning Duns (PMDs), Green Drakes, Caddisflies, and Golden Stones. Patterns like PMDs, Yellow Sallies, Purple Haze, Parachute Pheasant Tail, and Cornfed Caddis have all yielded good results. Additionally, a size 16 Purple or Gold Chubby has been enticing some fish.

Nymphing: Nymphing has been yielding a good number of fish but is less advisable given the current water temperatures. The stress of fighting fish in warmer water can be detrimental to their health. However, using a shallow dropper setup (1-2 feet) beneath a Chubby pattern has been producing some success. Effective nymph patterns include Jig PTs, Brown Quill Perdigons, Frenchies, Yellow Spots, and Duracells.
