Blackfoot River Hatch Report – 4/16

DSCN0980More wind, more sun, more willing fish. We’re actually been having pretty decent dry fly action in the afternoons up here on March browns. Despite blowing snow and cold water temps, the fish seem to be about as done with winter as everyone else is and are looking to the surface pretty consistently. The streamer fishing has been okay, only, but when you do connect, the fish have been HUGE! Oversized para Adams, Wullfs or button emergers with DEEP droppers of about 20″ have been a good prospecting rig. Tandem San Juans have been tagging some big browns in chest deep, slower moving water. It’s definitely an option that you should consider.
HATCHES: Caddis, nemouras, March Browns, BWOs, a skwala or two on the lower river.
PATTERNS: Size 12 elk hairs, parachute Adams or size 14 royal Wulffs, Powell’s bunny sculpins, whitlock sculpines in black. Red or pink San Jaun worms in tandem with size 12 or 14 hare’s ear nymphs.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: You know we’ll refill your Kingfisher label gink bottles for a buck dontcha?
