Blackfoot River Report: 0/0

 DSCN1255

Yup, more wind, how’d you guess?  This is April is getting eaten UP by wind compared to last year.  As good as the fishing’s been in the protracted winter, imagine how good it would be if we’d only get a break from the Insane Clown Posse flavored wind we’ve been dealing with.  In spite of all that, the Blackfoot continues to give up decent and predictable fishing considering the conditions.  Bigger, oversized March brown patterns (ie any kind of mayfly profile fly in your box in sizes 10 to16) seem to be the bug of choice for fish that’re looking up.  There are surprising numbers of fish taking dries in the afternoons too.  The nymph rigs have been doing ok, but streamers have been better.  Working your way downstream (so your swing hits new water instead of your splash cast entry) with a variety of heavy sinking artillery, will tag you some fatties for sure.  Patience and avoiding either very deep or particularly fast water will pay off.

HATCHES: Caddis, nemouras, March Browns, BWOs, a skwala or two on the lower river.

PATTERNS: Size 12 elk hairs, parachute Adams or size 14 royal Wulffs, Powell’s bunny sculpins, whitlock sculpines in black. Red or pink San Jaun worms in tandem with size 12 or 14 hare’s ear nymphs.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: You know we’ll refill your Kingfisher label gink bottles for a buck dontcha?
