Mandatory Drought Closure – 2 PM to Midnight

Hoot owl restrictions will go into effect 07/25/13 for the Clark Fork River from its confluence with the Bitterroot River to its confluence with the Flathead River. There will be no fishing on this stretch of the river from 2pm to midnight until further notice.

The lower river near Superior and St Regis has been topping out near 70 degrees for awhile now and the hoot owl restrictions that are in place won’t be reassessed by FWP until the 15th.  This means you should get on early and be done by 2.  Not a bad deal though, since the Clark has been fishing well (especially on these lower sections) about the minute you hit the water in the morning.  Basic parachute Adams, Turck’s Tarantulas with deep p-tail droppers and slow moving, dark bodied streamers have been working very well for us from first light until about 10.  Once mid morning hits, the streamers have been shutting off HARD and the surface feeding shifts pretty dramatically over to spruce moths and most recently, black cricket type stuff (a black coloring job with a permanent marker on your hoppers will work).  The river above Missoula has been so-so.  Though town and down to about Harper’s has been inner tube hell and the sections below that to about 9 mile are too long for 1/2 day stuff.  The fishing starts at 9 mile.
