The considerably cooler water temps on the Clark have improved the consistency of the fishing pretty dramatically. Tricos are still the name of the game early in the day, but the midday fishing is much improved under the clouds and even in the sunny breaks between cloud cover. Fishing small soft hackles or sparse midge subsurface patterns underneath a size 14 royal Wulff has been the easiest way to whack the ultra selective trico eaters in the mornings. If you hit the river at around 7:30 a.m., you’ll see LOTS of “bulging” rise forms just below the surface and depending on the day, these guys can be very easy with the previously mentioned setup or even more selective. Using that rig during the rise (beginning around 9), fish have been very willing to take the soft hackles as well as the Wulff itself. The midday streamer fishing has been silly with olive smaller stuff in the clouds and attractor/dropper rigs in the sun. Looks like another happy Clark Fork day on tap for today.
