Well, the anticipated weekend cloud cover materialized, but the fishing was so so.  Not a real mystery though, because bright sun generally isn’t the issue it can be in mid summer.  On the bright afternoons, red Turck’s tarantulas sitting near motionless in the “frog water” will eventually get sipped if you’ve got the patience to wait.  They have also been good prospecting patterns on mellow seam lines.  The evening fishing on the lower river has been surprisingly good recently too with lots of fish on the move to emergers well after the sun goes behind the mountain.  Our best bet for these guys has been a smaller sized soft hackle quartered upstream and gently pulled back with long, slow strips.  The hits are HARD and if you’re surprised, break off hook sets are guaranteed!   The upper river remains very good with yellow and other brightly colored streamers.  Look for afternoon baetis and mahoganies in heat of the day.
