We have a great crew of guys working here at The Kingfisher and wanted to give them a chance to introduce themselves. Next up is Jason Looney. Jason grew up in Missoula and has worked here in the shop since he was in high school. He specializes in freshwater barracuda and trout under 6″.
I got into fly fishing when I was.... too young to remember, and started tying flies around that same time. I spent my childhood growing up in both Issaquah Washington and Missoula Montana. I picked up my love of water sometime back in Washington. My mother would take me down to the coastal streams around the area and I would watch the salmon and steelhead run upstream in my water goggles.
My first real book was a signed copy of Tying Dry Flies by Randal Kauffman. During the summers we would travel around the northwest camping and fishing until I moved out to Montana in sixth grade. I spent the rest of my child hood here, causing mischief and chasing trout on Missoula's Rattlesnake Creek and other local waters. Missoula is a good place to grow up. I started working at The Kingfisher back in high school when I realized I wasn't cut out to be a line cook or dishwasher anymore. That was a good decision. After high school, I needed some new water... BAD, so I decided to cross the country and move to Florida. There I got to bump elbows and learn from some of the best saltwater fisherman around. Stu Apte, Lefty Kreh, Scott Walker and some of the other salty guys. I also picked up my insatiable appetite for spear fishing there.
All this brought me full circle back to Missoula, Where I now call home. I spend my days fishing our local waters for extremely small fish and spear fishing for those low-down-dirty-rotten pike in the Seeley lake chain.
