Rock Creek Fishing Report 7/15

Current Conditions: The creek is running pretty warm right now peaking at around 70 degrees daily. Flows have dropped to around 350 cfs. With these low water levels, it’s reasonable to anticipate potential fishing restrictions in the near future. In the meantime, the low flows make river crossings relatively easy and provide clearer indications of where fish might be holding. Getting on the water early in the day seems to be the ticket to successful fishing right now. If you carry a thermometer, it’s a good idea to monitor the water temperature trough out the day.

Dry Fly Fishing: PMDs have been quite active in the mornings until around 10 a.m. Caddis remain quite active in the mornings as well as evenings.

Streamer Fishing: Despite the lower flow, trout are still actively chasing streamers. Smaller patterns like the Sculpzilla, mini Bangtail, or Sparkle Minnow are effective. While cloudy days are ideal for streamer fishing, fish have been responding well even on sunny days.

Nymphing: As temperatures rise throughout the day, focusing on getting your nymphs down into the water column becomes important. Effective patterns to use include Pheasant Tails (PTs), Spanish Bullets, Hare’s Ears, and Yellow Sallies, either as droppers or below a bobber.

Tight lines and enjoy your fishing!
