Rock Creek Report – 9/22

It’s beginning to feel a lot like fall up here these days.  The best dryfly fishing is now firmly midday although you can still catch some fish on dries early and late.  The big fall mayflies have begun to show up along with some mahoganies and October caddis.  Our best bugs still haven’t changed though, with #12 royal Stimis and a #14 purple haze doing the most damage for us.  Nymphing is still very productive although you will be wading through lots of whities for the trout you get.  Not a huge issue though, it’s a pull on your line from a native game fish!  With any kind of sunshine, bees and ants have been working well in the mix too and sinking a wasp or bee pattern tightlined through riffles is almost a sure thing midday.  Rock Creek is running 163 cfs this morning.
